Packaging and transporting a cake is every baker's worst nightmare. After all the love, attention and long hours that have gone into making a cake, the last thing you want is for it to be damaged in transit. So, how can you ensure that it's packaged safely and gets to the customer in one piece?

In this blog, we will be walking you through the key steps you should take to safely and securely package a cake for delivery!

What packaging should you use?

When dealing with a wedding cake, you may want to invest in a sturdy plastic container or box designed to withstand the weight and usually larger dimensions. Not only will this keep the cake stable until it arrives at the venue, but you will likely be able to get the box back.

However, for everyday customer cakes, you will want to invest in paper cake boxes with lids. These boxes are practical, affordable and incredibly versatile, making them the ideal choice for any baker. They come in various sizes, and best of all, they can be combined to create a large box for taller cakes.

The other item you may want to use when it comes to securing your cake is a cake board. Sitting your cake on these boards will not only help to stabilise it, but it will also provide extra room around the cake in case the box is held incorrectly or squeezed by a courier.

How to package the cake

The first step is to ensure that your cake box is the correct size for your cake; for instance, if your cake board is 10 inches, you should use a 10-inch box for a secure fit. Once you have your box, you should open it up completely and lay the bottom portion flat on a table.

From there, you should slot together only one side of the box, so there is space on the opposite side to slide the cake inside. Most bakers find that storing their cakes in the fridge until they are due to be packaged helps keep everything in place when transferring it into the packaging.

Once the box is in place, carefully place the cake before securing the other side. You can then open up the lid section of the box and gently place it on top, being careful not to squish the top of the cake. From there, you may want to add some tape to the edge of the lid just in case, but otherwise, your cake is ready to go!
