Stretch wrap or stretch film is a plastic film that is highly stretchable, so it can wrap around items. Stretch wrap is designed to keep items tightly bound using the elastic recovery. One of its most frequent uses is to secure pallet loads of contents. The use of the stretch wrap helps to ensure that the contents are safe and secure during the shipping process. Most stretch wrap is made with a linear low-density polyethene. However, other stretch wrap materials are used to allow for the material to elongate when it stretches or resist punctures. Most of these films have about a 500 % stretch rate at the break but are usually only stretched to around 100 per cent or 300 per cent. It is the elastic recovery that helps to keep the load tight.
Stretch wraps are produced using two methods, which are blown or cast. When the stretch wrap is blown, the resin is first melted, and then pushed through an annular die, and finally air cooled. This provides a higher quality material but can be a lengthier process to complete. An alternative production method is a cast, where the film is pushed through a slot die and finally passed over rollers for cooling, which makes the process quicker. However, the speed does not allow for a high-quality result, as the blown method produces.
The main functions for stretch wrap include:
- Improving product or package’s stability
- Provides some degree of protection against moisture or dust
- Provides for more efficiency for storage and handling
- Provides some degree of protection against the sun
- May work to extend the shelf life of some foods
- Provides some degree of tamper resistance
- Provides some degree of protection for package pilferage
Stretch wrap comes in various forms for different uses. Stretch wrap can be used as manual wrappers, or with semi-automatic or automatic wrappers. There are several types of wrap designed that are created for various types of uses with the main focus of creating a durable structural unit or adding the protection needed when transporting or storing. Stretch wrap is a valuable tool for businesses and individuals because it can be used to protect goods.
